About Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is a relaxing and de-stressing massage of the scalp, face, neck, shoulders and upper arms. Oil to the scalp is optional. There are two variants; Traditional Ayurvedic and Western Style. The treatment incorporates shiatsu and acupressure techniques on the head, scalp, face, neck, upper back, shoulders, arms, ears and hands, helping to relax tense areas and rebalance the body energy by releasing any areas of negativity or stress.

Indian Head Massage is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing system using the upper Chakras and has been practiced in India for thousands of years. Head Massage not only proves an invaluable treatment, it also helps relieve stress related problems including: headaches, eyestrain and neck and shoulder stiffness. The head more than any other part of our body represents who we are. It is the centre of our nervous system, and home to our identity and intelligence. The Chakra at the top of our head (Crown Chakra) is the one we use to communicate with our higher self. If our head feels good, we feel good.

The skull is covered with a thin layer of muscle which tightens when we are feeling tense, resulting in a headache and/or feelings of anxiety. By relaxing the muscles, a head massage can improve blood flow, alleviate anxiety and relax your whole body. There are energy centres in the region of the shoulders, upper back, neck, upper arms and face, the treatment of which can benefit the whole body. A combination of rhythmic strokes will soothe and rebalance the energy flow, creating feelings of ease and peace.

In addition this massage reduces stress levels, improves skin tone, increases alertness, stimulates the mind, improves sleep, strengthens hair, eliminates toxins and is psychologically uplifting.

You will sit upright in a chair for this totally non-invasive treatment and you do not have to remove any clothing. The therapist will work routines around your head, neck, shoulder and upper arms. The treatment should last around 30 minutes but the benefits will last for days. Although the massage focuses on the upper parts of the body, the massage will have an impact on the whole body.

History of Indian Head Massage

Referred to in the Ayurvedic writings 4000 years ago, when Indian women would massage each others head in order to delay the on set of greying. This massage would also strengthen the hair. Massaging the head would start when a baby was born, but stopping with males at adulthood. Male Barbers would continue the massaging of adult males whilst having a hair cut.

Indian Head massage was brought to the UK by Narendra Mehta who was disappointed that massage was not used when having his hair cut. He returned to India to learn the skills and also incorporated the shoulders and arms.
